El Grito celebrates independence
Portland, OR — Celebrants yet again packed Pioneer Square Sept. 15 for El Grito y Fiestas Patrias, honoring the independence of Mexico and other Latin American countries. Aztec and folkloric dancers entertained the crowds, while attendees often did their own dancing to live music from diverse bands. Franco Hernán was named the winner of the first ever Voz de la Independencia singing contest. Mexican Cónsul Enrique A. Romero Cuevas delivered the traditional revolutionary cry of independence and Portland Mayor Sam Adams declared Sept. 15 the “Day of El Grito y Fiestas Patrias Celebration” in the city.
