Portland, OR — On Saturday night Chivas USA handed the Portland Timbers a frustrating loss by the final score of 1-2 at Jeld-Wen Field.

The first half of the game was more favorable to the Timbers. In short, they created more opportunities to score and took the lead at the 16th minute thanks to their designated player, Kris Boyd. Lovel Palmer made a long cross into the Chivas’ 18-yard box and the keeper bumped against a defender in midair, causing him to lose the ball. Boyd found himself with the ball at his feet and an open net before him, and took the shot for the 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the dynamic would change drastically. Chivas USA took the control of the game and created more opportunities to score than the Timbers.

The tie came at the 48th minute by Alejandro Moreno. Moreno headed a ball right above defender Eric Bruner that left Timbers keeper Troy Perkins without any chance to make a save.

The deciding goal came at the 82nd minute with another long cross from the left wing. This time, Nick Labrocca found the ball and headed it into the back of the net for the 1-2 lead.

“For me, we played like an expansion team tonight,” Coach Jon Spencer said after the game. “We played nervous in front a big crowd, with not enough guys stepping up and taking responsibility.”

Oswaldo Minda, a Chivas player from Ecuador, said he was happy with the win. “Despite some losses that the team [Chivas] has had, tonight we showed great attitude, great heart to face adversity,” Minda said.

The Timbers next game will be in Los Angeles against the reigning champs L.A. Galaxy April 14 at 7:30 p.m.
