The Portland Mercado celebrates the Latino contribution to our region, honors our growing diversity and serves as a bridge to unite cultures and communities in Portland. Opened in early 2015 by Hacienda CDC, the Portland Mercado has helped small businesses grow while bringing together diverse cultures and has become a recognized part of the Portland tapestry. Hacienda CDC is looking for a Marketing and Events Coordinator to ensure the continued success of the Portland Mercado. The Mercado has created an opportunity for 19 full-time businesses and regularly welcomes temporary vendors and performers at over 40 cultural events held throughout the year. The Marketing and Events Coordinator also works alongside the Portland Mercado Advising Program. Situated in Portland’s first Latino public market, the program offers business advising, training, an affordable commissary kitchen and sales opportunities for low-income, immigrant entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs of color. We have launched and scaled businesses that have opened food carts, gone on to sell at New Seasons, and more. We are a small, energetic, creative team – and are a part of a bigger organization (Hacienda CDC) that does a wide range of work supporting Portland’s Latino community.
Join Team Hacienda! We are recruiting a unique individual who will be responsible for creating an engaged, active community with external and internal partners. The Marketing and Events Coordinator takes the lead in maintaining the Portland Mercado brand and facilitates the greater community’s participation in the space. This position will support the tenant group and Portland Mercado programs as a whole through; community and private events hosted at the market, marketing through social and traditional media, and structural aesthetic projects (ex. mural) that improve the market. We are looking for someone that holds exceptional organizational skills in project management and bringing people together towards a common goal. Hacienda seeks a unique individual who is enthusiastic about creating a place for community and who communicates effectively. Candidates must be bilingual in English and Spanish, with experience working in the Latino community, as well as across cultures.
There is strong community support for the market. Community leaders, politicians, artists, the media, and volunteers have regularly attended events, shopped, or supported the Mercado. This position will continue to build the community around the market through events, as well as online and traditional media communications. They will develop new regular and creative content, and will be the public’s main contact for the Mercado. In all of these activities, there is a strong emphasis on empowering the tenants to be actively involved in planning and implementation.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
50% – Event planning and coordination
Respond to private and community partner requests to have events at the market. Help them with logistics and payment. Promote the opportunity to host events at market in the community. Facilitate tenant involvement as needed.
Work with tenants and Mercado Director to create and implement a schedule of recurring events at the market. Summer – focus on outdoor activities with large crowds. Winter – focus on smaller, regular events hosted inside.
Organize, plan and coordinate both small and large events throughout the year, including our annual Taste of Latin America and Portland Mercado Anniversary events. Vendor and volunteer coordination; sponsorships, entertainment; logistics; direct promotion in the community; web page for event; social media boosts; post on community event calendars.
Manage inventory of marketing and event materials.
40% – Engaging Mercado customer community through marketing and media
Respond to the general market email, phone and google alerts.
Manage Portland Mercado’s online presence: Regularly update the Portland Mercado Website, use SEO and AdWords tools. Post 5-7x/week on social media, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Encourage tenants and clients to create content. Use marketing funds to do carry out regular campaigns.
Coordinate marketing projects, and with tenant input. Design and create creative content – videos, photos, flyers – to keep marketing materials up-to-date. Coordinate with outside vendors or contractors as needed.
Send monthly community e-newsletter. Encourage tenants to provide content.
Create relationships with media and ad campaigns and post on media websites, tag media in posts, invite media to events and update information about program on online directories and our market’s website.
10% – Physical structure, market merchandise oversight, and other duties
Establish and maintain retail partnerships with tenants to sell Mercado merchandise, track progress, and fulfill payments.
Report issues with cleaning, maintenance and upkeep of public Mercado spaces to property management.
Support tenant recruitment as needed.
Attend required team meetings and trainings.
Other duties as needed.
Desired Skills and Characteristics
Fluent English and Spanish required, bi-cultural candidates are encouraged.
1-2 years of marketing experience, including design and content creation.
Passionate about micro-enterprise, food and working in the community.
Excellent, consistent communicator.
Can thrive on a small, dynamic team. Maintains positive, motivational attitude.
Is highly organized, with event planning experience and time management skills.
Excellent at organizing people to complete projects and activities.
Has real and extensive experience working in the Latino community.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Compensation is dependent upon experience ranging $38,000 – $42,000 annually, DOE. In addition to the salary, Hacienda CDC offers a generous paid time off and benefits package.

This is a full time, non-exempt position. It is anticipated that the employee will work a flexible schedule, making time evenings and weekends to support events, community meetings, and to respond to public affairs matters. All positions at Hacienda CDC are at will and subject to annual performance evaluations.
